Las Vegas Review
Oddly enough, my adventure in learning to play and love the saxophone started when I picked up a trumpet. When I was only 10 my father had encouraged me to learn a musical instrument, and I realized right away that I simply didn't have the same connection with that "Getzen" that my father did. He recommended I try the clarinet instead, and I soon began playing it in a community brass band in Paranaque, Metro Manila. That experience later lead me to find my own "voice" through the saxophone. Coming from a very musical family, my father and uncle were important mentors to me. They not only taught me to play and execute the music I read on paper, but also to feel it and give it life. I can remember when I was growing up listening in on my father's band rehearsals in our home. Standard tunes and Jazz Fusion... I was always fascinated with the idea of improvisation and how someone could start with a melody then take that same form and create something completely new... On-the-spot! Playing with scales and time. Knowing how to bend the "rules" of music and when to break them in the name of artistic expression! Throughout the years the faces of his band-members changed and so did the repetoire, but one thing always remained the same... He always reinforced that being a good musician meant discipline and dedication. With that foundation in place, I fell in love with the saxophone at age 17. I filled my head with great music by saxophone giants like David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., Tom Scott, Phil Woods and Richie Cole... Also with groups like Chic Corea, Weather Report and Alphonse Mouzon, YellowJackets. I soon found myself playing the club circuit in Manila, Philippines, Carrebian Cruises, Las Vegas doing Top-40, Show Tunes, Jazz and Rock. The stage gave me a chance to apply all the things I'd learned through out the years as well as to develop my own signature style and sound. Las Vegas has been my home now since 1990. Throughout the years it's been an exciting adventure to work with and learn from musicians from different parts of the world--each with their own unique talents. There is something truly special about chemistry and the exchange of musical ideas. Aside from playing the saxophone, i also shared and contributed my other abilities by playing the guitar, bass and singing. My experiences have made for many fond memories and lifelong friendships. I enjoy all kinds of music, and I am constantly striving to better myself as a musician as well as an entertainer. To me "success" is not a measure of material things. It is a sense of personal fulfillment; and I am so fortunate enough to experience my passion for music. In my spare time, I write and produce original instrumental tunes. Part of my inspiration is in spending quality time with my family and friends. I know I won't always play professionally, but music will forever be in my heart. I am thankful for each moment of life God has given me. Sharing my time, energy and music with others is one way for me to return my appreciation.
